Second Grade
Carriage Wheels & Whirligigs
Program explores the history of the wheel. Students will travel through the museum and view the different kinds of wheels on different vehicles and then design a whirligig (an old fashion toy) to resemble a wheel.

The Great American
Race
Students will hear the story of “The Great American Race” - a race between a steam engine “The Tom Thumb” and horse-drawn railroad cars. Students will color a poster of an early vehicle and tour the museum.

Third and Fourth Grade
Long Journey
Westward
Students will build a section of the road and complete an activity sheet on the building of the road. Students will map the National Road and do a worksheet on the mapping. Also, students will help pack a crate with things they might have taken on their trip and then discuss why they packed those items. Students will view an original Conestoga Wagon and take a tour of the museum.
Time: 90-120 minutes

Fifth and Sixth Grade
Maryland On The Move
Students explore Maryland’s transportation history through hands on activities. In small groups, students design early forms of transportation such as wagons, hot air balloons ,trains and airplanes at various stations throughout the museum. Students will take a tour of the museum.
Time- 60-90 minutes

Junior High through High School
The History of Cumberland’s Transportation
Students will tour the museum and learn about Cumberland and Allegany County’s rich transportation history and do a scavenger hunt.
